Welcome to the School of Knock. Whether you've never held a table tennis bat before or you've been playing casually for years without formal coaching, our courses are designed to build your skills at a pace that suits you.

Based in Leeds, UK, we run three progressive levels. Each level takes approximately 8 weeks with one training session per week. You don't need to wait for a term to start – just book into the level that matches your current ability.

Foundation Level 1

Getting Started

For: Absolute beginners and those returning after a long break.

Goal: Build consistency and learn the fundamentals.

Before moving on to advanced shots, it's important to develop reliable technique. In this level, we focus on rhythm, correct contact point, and basic spin control.

What You'll Learn:

  • Forehand & Backhand Rallies: Develop consistent shot production.
    • Target: 30–55 shots per minute depending on skill level.
  • Push Technique (FH & BH): Learn to control backspin during rallies.
    • Target: 25–45 shots per minute depending on skill level.
  • Serves: Master legal Topspin and Backspin serves.
    • Target: Land 12–17 out of 20 serves legally on the table.

Completion:

Once you can rally consistently and serve without faults, you're ready to progress.

Foundation Level 2

Building Skills

For: Players who can keep the ball on the table but want to improve variety and movement.

Goal: Add footwork, alternating strokes, and introductory attack shots.

This level transitions you from reactive play to actively shaping points. You'll work on lateral movement, switching between forehand and backhand mid-rally, and learning the Tomahawk serve.

  • Two-Point Movement: Forehand rallies while moving side-to-side.
    • Target: 20–40 shots per minute depending on skill level.
  • Alternating FH/BH Rallies: Switch between strokes under pressure.
    • Target: 24–48 shots per minute depending on skill level.
  • Attacking Backspin: Open against incoming backspin with confidence.
    • Target: Land 7–16 hits out of 20 attempts.
  • Tomahawk Techniques: Introduction to Tomahawk Topspin and Backspin.
    • Target: Land 7–16 hits out of 20 attempts.

Completion:

When you can move effectively and execute these shots reliably, you're ready for Level 3.

Foundation Level 3

Match Play Ready

For: Players who want to compete in league play or have structured match tactics.

Goal: Heavy topspin, aggressive returns, and tactical patterns.

This final foundation level prepares you for actual competitive play. You'll master powerful loops, short-ball flicks, and most importantly, the Serve + 3rd Ball Pattern—the key to winning points early.

  • Heavy Topspins (FH & BH): Generate power and consistent spin.
    • Target: 25–50 shots per minute depending on skill level.
  • Flick Technique (FH & BH): Attack short serves effectively.
    • Target: Land 7–17 hits out of 20 attempts.
  • Advanced Serves: Hook Serve and Backhand Sidespin for variety.
    • Target: Land 7–17 hits out of 20 attempts.
  • Serve + 3rd Ball Pattern: Execute tactical sequences from serve through attack.
    • High Distinction: Execute reliably in controlled points.

Completion:

After passing Level 3, you're match-ready and invited to join the Community Table Tennis Club (CTTC) league.
